At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, we believe that through high-quality art experiences, every child can flourish creatively, emotionally and intellectually. All pupils should have access to an art education rooted in creativity, curiosity and self-expression.
Our carefully sequenced scheme of work sets out clearly defined knowledge and skills, enabling pupils to develop both practical techniques and theoretical understanding over time. Substantive knowledge is taught and regularly revisited, supporting pupils in building fluency and confidence in their artistic abilities.
We aim for all pupils to produce excellent outcomes, underpinned by a secure understanding of key skills. Through this, they learn to express their own ideas uniquely, critically analyse the work of artists from a range of cultures and periods, and understand how art has both shaped and reflected society throughout history.
We provide all pupils with the opportunity to access the full breadth of the art curriculum, including drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, collage and digital art. Particular emphasis is placed on sketching and painting, with other disciplines woven across the year to ensure breadth and balance. Skills are developed through high-quality modelling, repetition, and over-learning, enabling pupils to progress with increasing independence and refinement.
Sketchbooks are used purposefully in all year groups to practise techniques, experiment with ideas and reflect on learning. Pupils are encouraged to evaluate their work thoughtfully, identify strengths, and make informed decisions about how to adapt and improve future pieces.
By the time they leave Holy Cross, our pupils will have the confidence, knowledge and artistic literacy to think, create and respond like artists. They will have experienced the joy of art as a powerful form of communication and developed a deep appreciation for creativity in the world around them.
