At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, geography inspires pupils to be curious about the people, places and environments of our world. Pupils learn not only to locate and name places, but to make meaningful connections and comparisons, helping them to understand how the world is shaped and how it continues to change.
Our geography curriculum is based on the PlanBee scheme of work and is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6 to ensure progressive development of knowledge and skills. Learning builds on prior understanding, with clear links between topics to support a cohesive and secure geographical understanding.
As a Catholic school, we encourage pupils to develop a sense of awe and wonder in God’s creation through fieldwork, hands-on learning and exploration of our local area. Living on the Isle of Wight provides rich opportunities for pupils to study their immediate environment, explore how communities are formed and understand the human and physical features on their doorstep.
Pupils learn about diverse cultures and communities across the world, developing empathy, respect and an awareness of global issues such as climate change, sustainability and environmental responsibility. Geography is enriched through cross-curricular links with subjects such as science and mathematics, supporting pupils to apply skills in real-world contexts.
Our aim is for pupils to leave Holy Cross as informed, curious and responsible global citizens, with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
