French

At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, our aim for French is to foster a love of languages and nurture a global outlook among our pupils. Rooted in our mission of 'One School Family, Achieving Together, Anchored in the love of Christ', our French curriculum is designed to inspire confidence, curiosity, and respect for other cultures.

We follow the Twinkl scheme of work, which provides a logically sequenced, engaging, and age-appropriate programme of study. This curriculum builds progressively on children’s prior knowledge and skills, ensuring that learning is meaningful, purposeful, and in line with national curriculum requirements and best practice. At Holy Cross we also understand the importance of oracy. This is reflected in UKS2, where we have made the decision to cover each topic over a term, rather than half termly. Whilst still ensuring national curriculum coverage, we can ensure our pupils are provided with time dedicated to practising their conversational French.

We intend to deliver a high-quality French curriculum that enables our pupils to:

  • develop confidence in communicating in another language

  • build an appreciation and respect for diverse cultures and communities

  • apply language skills with creativity and enthusiasm

  • deepen their understanding of their role as responsible citizens in a global community

“Language is not a genetic gift, it is a social gift. Learning a new language is becoming a member of the club – the community of speakers of that language.”
Frank Smith
